Alexander Volodin

Alexander Moiseevich Volodin (Lifshitz) - a popular Russian writer, screenwriter, and dramaturg. Born in 1919 in Minsk, Belarus. Died in 2001, in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1949, Alexander Volodin graduated from the Screenwriting faculty of the VGIK (class of V. Yunakovsky). Before the war, Volodin was a teacher of Russian at a school in Veshki, Moscow Region. Subsequently, he served in the army and fought in the war, where he was wounded twice.

From 1949 to 1956, Mr. Volodin worked as an Editor and Screenwriter at the LenNauchFilm Studio film production company. From 1956-1957, he was a Senior Editor and a member of the Artistic Council at Lenfilm Studio.

Notable Plays: 1. Factory Girl (1956) – first staged at the Central Theatre of the Soviet Army, directed by Boris Lvov-Anokhin. 2. Five Evenings (1959) – premiered at the Bolshoi Drama Theater, directed by Georgy Tovstonogov. 3. Elder Sister (1961) – staged at Sovremennik Theatre. 4. The Appointment (1963). 5. The Adventures of a Dentist (1965). 6. The Magician (1967). 7. Mothers and Daughters (1974), and 8. Autumn Marathon (1979).
